Movie Day

It was the last week before the start of school and we wanted to do something fun and relaxing. We decided to watch "Little Woman" - a movie about the childhood of four young woman growing up in a world that revolved around men. The movie pointed out important issues in our societies and how its like to grow up in a world where men are considered more dominant. The girls enjoyed watching the movie while eating snacks and treats. After the movie, we asked the girls to write a short review/thoughts of the movie.

Here are some of the girls review of the movie

Little Women Review

The 2019 film Little Women follows the story of 4 sisters, Meg, Amy, Jo, and Beth who all lived in the time of Cival War in Concord, Massachusetts. Their oldest sister, Meg is married to a schoolteacher, Jo lives in New York and plans to become a writer, Amy studies painting in Paris, and Beth catches an illness that brings the family back together. The theme/message of the film is the danger of gender stereotyping. Women, they have minds, and they have souls as well as hearts. They’ve got ambition, talent and beauty, besides the fact that people keep saying love is just all a woman is fit for! And the assumption that all women need to marry well so that the man could go out and work to provide for his spouse and family. Yet we women are so much more than that! we should not be scolded for living one way or another. Loving relationships are more important to ones mental, physical, emotional, and spiritual health than anything else the world tells you. “Pain shapes woman into a warrior.” - r.h. Sin

What you liked about the movie?

They show what love in a family is and they all love and respect each other, but it does not mean the girls see things in the same way or do not disagree with each other

How it represented female empowerment and women in this society?

The movie talks about different ways of living and why women shouldn't be criticized for that. It is crucial that people feel satisfied with their life decisions because that is all that counts. It clarifies that a woman can be pleased either alone or in a partnership.

Theme/message of the movie

The themes were women's struggle between familial duty and personal growth. Little Women focuses on the tension between two priorities in a young woman's life. That she places on herself and that which she places on her family. It is a story of the four March sisters' transitions from childhood to adulthood.

The movie Little Women shows realistic dynamics between sisters and how women in society are undermined without a man to define their worth. I really liked the storyline of the movie and how it managed to portray the hardships families endured in that time, along with keeping relationships between partners, sisters, and neighbors interesting. All the March sisters were very talented individuals, with their own strengths, yet most thought they would need a man to support their family. Jo March was the one sister who strongly wished to not wed, and used her talents in writing to earn and support for her family. This movie had strong themes of sisterhood, femininity, struggles and sacrifices, all which were explained very clearly throughout the storyline.

Jo from little women showed how marriage isn't everything when it comes to being a woman, she proved that you can be successful without following what society expects you to do. My favorite part of the movie was when Jo inherited her aunt's manor and decided to open a school for both boys and girls instead of living in it. Her and her family are the people who think about the future and put others before them. The main message is do what your heart wants you to do and with that there will be obstacles in the way, but if you really want it then you'll overcome it.
